Custom Formulation & Product Development Across Core Categories
Custom formulation turns a product idea into a finished, market-ready formula built around your brand's specific goals. Our R&D team supports custom formulation across personal care, household, pet care, and specialty categories. Development requirements vary by product type, active ingredients, claims, testing, packaging, and production fit. More brands are moving away from generic recipes and toward formulas built for a defined target audience and product vision. Ally Labs supports emerging and scaling brands through this process, using more than 40 years of formulation experience to move a concept toward production with confidence.

How Custom Formulation Works
Custom formulation starts with a working product brief developed with our team. We look at your brand, category, target customer, product goals, performance expectations, target cost, expected volume, packaging, and other commercial requirements before recommending a formulation direction.

Depending on your starting point, we may formulate from a defined concept, build around a featured ingredient, or help shape a product concept using brand and category context. Marketing, R&D, and Technical can collaborate where appropriate so the product story and manufacturing requirements develop together rather than independently.
Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard development fee for qualified manufacturing projects. Standard formulation, sampling, reverse-engineering, and reformulation support may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities. Unusual raw-material, third-party testing, regulatory, documentation, or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable.
Custom formulations move through the stability, quality, packaging, and other review required for the project before production readiness. Requirements vary based on the formula, intended use, claims, packaging, and other project needs.
Formulation, manufacturing, filling, and packaging support are coordinated through our 183,000-square-foot facility in Evanston, Wyoming, keeping development and production connected through one team.

Benefits of Custom Formulation
A Formula Built Around Your Product Vision
Custom formula development means the formula matches your product vision instead of a stock recipe adjusted after the fact. Our team works from your target audience and product concept from the first review, so texture, fragrance, and performance decisions support your brand.
Confidence Before You Scale
One team coordinates development. Formulas complete the minimum 90-day stability requirement, while formulation, additional testing, packaging, and production requirements are evaluated for each product.
Compliance Built Into the Process
Formulas developed here are produced in a cGMP compliant, FDA-registered facility, with quality control built into each production stage. That gives your brand a documented, consistent process behind every batch, not just a finished product.
One Team From Formulation to Production
Formulation, manufacturing, filling, and packaging happen under one roof, with the same development team reviewing your project at each stage. That reduces the handoffs that typically slow a product from concept to production.
No Separate Standard Development Fee
Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard development fee for qualified manufacturing projects. Standard formulation, sampling, reverse-engineering, and reformulation support may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities. Unusual raw-material, third-party testing, regulatory, documentation, or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable.
We Can Start From the Marketing Story
If you know you want to expand but not what to make, we build the positioning first, then develop concepts and select ingredients to match it. Most manufacturers start at the formula. Starting at the story means the product has a reason to exist before it has a texture.
R&D Across Every Product Line We Manufacture
Custom formulation is not a skincare-only service. The same R&D team, brief, and stability process applies across every category we manufacture. Some categories also have pre-stabilized bases ready to customize when speed matters more than a formula built from scratch.
Who Needs Custom Formulation
Not every brand is ready for a fully custom formula. Here is how to know if this pathway fits your project.
You Have a Product Idea but No Formula
You know what you want your product to do and who it is for, but you do not have a formula, ingredient deck, or lab partner yet. Custom formulation starts here, with your concept as the foundation.
You're Expanding an Existing Product Line
Your brand already sells products, and you are ready to add a new item to the product line. A custom formula lets the new product stand apart, developed for your existing target audience and brand positioning.
You Need Specific Performance or Ingredient Requirements
Your product needs to meet particular performance benchmarks, ingredient restrictions, or natural formulation standards. Custom formula development lets our team formulate around those specific components rather than adapting a base that was not built for them.
You're Planning for Long-Term Scale
We consider scale-up and production requirements from the start, with any formulation or process adjustments evaluated as the project develops. Custom development plans for scalable production starting with the first formula review.
When custom formulation might not be the right fit: if your priority is speed to market over an original formula, Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base may fit better — it starts from an existing, stabilized formula you can customize. If you already have a product in market and are switching manufacturers, Tech Transfer is the better starting point.

Talk to our teamWhich product categories can Ally Labs formulate?
Ally Labs supports custom formulation across approved skincare, hair care, bath and body, household, pet care, specialty personal care, and select topical OTC / medical-device categories. Development and testing requirements vary by product type, active ingredients, claims, packaging, and production needs. Pre-stabilized starting points are available only for select approved products, while Specialty and select OTC opportunities are reviewed individually. OTC products are not part of the Pre-Stabilized Base pathway.
How much does custom formulation cost?
Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard development fee for qualified manufacturing projects. Standard formulation, sampling, reverse-engineering, and reformulation support may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities. Unusual raw-material, third-party testing, regulatory, documentation, or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable. Production pricing depends on formula complexity, ingredients, packaging, volume, and other project requirements.
Do you charge to reverse engineer or reformulate an existing product?
Standard formulation, sampling, reverse-engineering, and reformulation support may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities. Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard development fee for qualified manufacturing projects. Unusual raw-material, third-party testing, regulatory, documentation, or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable.
What is the difference between custom formulation and a Pre-Stabilized Base?
Custom formulation develops a new formula around your product brief, positioning, and performance goals. Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base begins with an established Ally Labs formulation foundation, then customizes supported elements around the brand and product goals. Depending on the base and requested changes, starting from a Base can reduce early formulation work and may help move the project into sampling sooner. Review, testing, packaging evaluation, and production-readiness requirements remain project-specific.
How long does a custom formula take to develop?
Development timing varies based on formula complexity, sample rounds, ingredient sourcing, testing, packaging, and other project requirements. Custom projects generally move through formulation, sampling, applicable stability and quality review, client approval, and production readiness before manufacturing begins. Once the formula is approved, required testing is addressed, materials and packaging are confirmed or on-site, and the project is production-ready, typical production lead time is approximately six to eight weeks. Actual timing varies by project and production scheduling.
Can I own my custom formula?
Formula ownership terms are addressed in your manufacturing contract with Ally Labs. Custom formulas developed for your brand are covered by the terms of your manufacturing contract, and ownership details are discussed directly with our team during project scoping, so you understand what applies to your specific formula before development begins.
What information do I need before starting a custom formula project?
Bring your product idea, target audience, and any specific performance or ingredient requirements. Before development begins, our team asks about your product idea, target market, and any specific components or performance requirements you already have in mind. You do not need a finished formula or technical specifications ready — our development team helps translate a product vision into a workable formulation plan.
Does Ally Labs handle packaging as well as formulation?
Filling and packaging are handled alongside formulation and manufacturing under one roof at our facility. Clients generally source their own packaging components, which we prefer — your development team reviews packaging fit alongside formula development, so the final product, packaging, and production plan are reviewed together. When appropriate, we can introduce packaging vendors to help you source the right format.
Is custom formulation only for large brands?
No — custom formulation supports emerging and scaling brands as well as established ones. Custom formulation is not limited to established brands with large budgets. Ally Labs works with emerging and scaling brands that have a clear product concept and target audience, alongside established brands developing a new product line.
What happens if my product idea needs adjustment during development?
Our team reviews and adjusts the formula with you before it moves to sample creation. Formula development includes review points where our team discusses adjustments with you, based on ingredient availability, stability results, or performance testing. This keeps the project moving toward a formula that matches your product vision, rather than locking in a direction too early.
