How New Product Development Works
New Product Development begins with a working product brief created with our team. Together we define product positioning, performance expectations, target volume, target cost, packaging considerations, ingredient goals, and other requirements that should guide formulation. We also consider relevant category and market context before recommending a development direction.

Our formulators develop samples for client review and refine the formula using clear, consolidated feedback. Sampling timing and the number of refinement rounds vary based on formulation complexity, ingredient sourcing, and project requirements. Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard formulation or sample-development fee for qualified manufacturing projects; unusual raw-material or project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance.
Once the formulation reaches the appropriate stage, it moves through the stability, quality, packaging, and other review required for the project. Claims and regulatory considerations can be reviewed as applicable, while final brand claims and compliance requirements remain specific to the finished product and intended market.
New Product Development is generally the right pathway when a brand needs a new formula rather than beginning from an approved Ally Labs Pre-Stabilized Base or transferring an existing product. Formulation, manufacturing, filling, and packaging support are coordinated through our 183,000-square-foot facility in Evanston, Wyoming.

Benefits of New Product Development
Built Around Your Brand
We develop and customize products around your positioning rather than simply relabeling a stock product.
Structured Product Development Toward Production
A defined development process helps move a concept toward a manufacturable formula and first sample on a realistic, project-specific timeline. Where applicable, the formula moves through the required stability and review period before final approval, separately from the production window. Once the formula is approved, required testing is addressed, materials and packaging are confirmed or on-site, and the project is production-ready, typical production lead time is approximately six to eight weeks. Actual timing varies by project and production scheduling.
Formulas Backed by Personal Care Expertise
Our formulation team has spent more than 40 years developing products for the personal care industry, not adapting recipes from an unrelated category. That depth means fewer surprises during scale-up and formulas that hold up to real customer feedback once your product reaches consumers.
Manufacturing Operations That Scale With Growth
Your first production run is rarely the last one. Our 183,000-square-foot facility supports scaled production, with capacity planning based on forecasts, line requirements, scheduling, and project needs.
Quality Control You Can Verify
We operate from a cGMP compliant, FDA-registered facility, with checks built into every stage of production instead of a single inspection at the end. Documented quality checkpoints and review support product evaluation before release.
Who Needs New Product Development
New product development is not the right path for every brand. Here is how to know if it fits your situation.
You Have a Product Idea, Not Yet a Formula
You know what problem your product should solve and who your target market is, but you do not have a finished formula yet. New product development turns that idea into a manufacturable product.
You Are Entering a New Category
Your brand wants to launch into a new category, such as skincare, but your team lacks in-house formulation expertise. Our formulation team fills that gap from concept through production.
You Need Formulation Capacity Your Team Does Not Have In-House
Building an internal R&D function takes time and money your brand may not have right now. Working with an established new product development manufacturer gives your project an experienced formulation team and a defined development process without building one internally.
When new product development might not be the right fit: if you already have a stable, in-market formula and simply need a new manufacturer, Tech Transfer is usually a faster and less costly path than starting a new formula from scratch.

Why Choose Ally Labs for New Product Development
For more than 40 years, our formulation and manufacturing team has turned product concepts into finished personal care goods. That track record means we can evaluate whether your idea is realistic before you invest further, and we offer three clearly defined pathways, so you always know which one fits your brand's stage of growth. The biggest hesitation with new product development is usually cost and timeline uncertainty. We address that early: where applicable, your project moves through a defined stability and review period before final approval, and that development and testing time sits outside the production window.

Talk to our teamHow much does new product development cost?
Ally Labs does not charge a separate standard development fee for qualified manufacturing projects. Standard formulation, sampling, and sample development may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities, with payment due when you place a production purchase order. Unusual raw-material, third-party testing, regulatory, documentation, or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable. Production cost itself depends on formula complexity, packaging, and volume. We do not publish a fixed minimum order quantity, since the right minimum depends heavily on the specific product.
How many rounds of samples do I get?
As many as the formula needs. Samples usually arrive within a couple of weeks of the brief, depending on ingredient sourcing. You review them and tell us what to change, we reformulate, and you get new samples. That loop repeats until you approve the formula. Standard sampling support may be provided as part of qualified manufacturing opportunities rather than billed as an extra, and any unusual raw-material or other project-specific costs are discussed and approved in advance when applicable.
What happens during the 90-day stability period?
Formulas complete a minimum 90-day stability period before approval. Additional testing or review may be required depending on the formula, packaging, claims, or other project requirements. In parallel, we work through your packaging decisions and review which claims are supportable for your product, so the formula, packaging, and labeling can move toward approval together rather than one waiting on the other.
What is the difference between new product development and building on a pre-stabilized base?
New product development builds a formula from scratch, while a pre-stabilized base starts from an existing, already stabilized formulation you can customize. New product development starts your formula from a blank page, built around your specific concept and target market. Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base instead starts from a formulation we have already developed and stabilized, which can shorten the early development stages. Brands with a highly specific concept usually choose new product development, while brands wanting to move faster often start with a pre-stabilized base.
How long does the new product development process take?
Custom formulas complete a minimum 90-day stability period before approval. Additional testing or review may be required depending on the formula, packaging, claims, or other project requirements. Development, testing, sourcing, packaging, and approval time sit outside the production window, and how long they take depends on formula complexity and how quickly decisions move through consultation and approval. Once the formula is approved, required testing is addressed, materials and packaging are confirmed or on-site, and the project is production-ready, typical production lead time is approximately six to eight weeks. Actual timing varies by project and production scheduling.
What is the new product development process?
It is a structured process that takes a product idea through formulation, testing, approval, and production, evaluating market potential at every stage. The new product development process starts with reviewing your idea against real market potential and your target market, then moves into formulation, sample testing, and stability testing. Each stage builds on customer feedback and quality control checkpoints before advancing. This structured approach reduces the risk of costly rework once a formula reaches production.
What raw materials are used in personal care product development?
Raw material selection depends on your product category, target market, and positioning, and is finalized during the formulation stage. Raw materials are selected based on your product category, whether skincare, hair care, or bath and body, along with your target market and brand positioning. Our formulation team evaluates ingredient options for performance, stability, and cost before finalizing a formula. Ingredient decisions are reviewed with you before a formula moves into sample development.
Can a new brand with no manufacturing experience use new product development services?
Yes, new product development is built for emerging brands that have a product idea but no in-house formulation or manufacturing experience. New product development is designed for emerging and scaling brands, including founders launching a new brand with no prior manufacturing background. Our team guides you through business analysis, formulation, and production, so you do not need in-house technical expertise. You bring the product idea and target market insight. We bring the formulation and manufacturing process.
Is new product development worth it for a small personal care brand?
It depends on your goals. We develop and customize products around your positioning rather than simply relabeling a stock product, so the finished product is built around your brand. Whether new product development makes sense depends on your growth stage and how differentiated you want your product to be. Brands focused on a distinct formula and long-term brand building often find it worth the investment, since the resulting product is developed specifically around their concept. Ownership of the formula is set out in your written agreement with us. Brands wanting a more efficient starting point may consider a pre-stabilized base instead.
What factors affect the success of a new product development project?
Success depends on realistic market research, a clear target market, formula quality, and a manufacturing partner with proven process development experience. Several factors affect whether a new product succeeds: how well the concept matches real market research and consumer demand, the quality of the formulation, and whether the manufacturing partner has a proven process development track record. Consistent quality control and clear communication throughout production also reduce the risk of delays or costly errors.
