New Product Development or a Pre-Stabilized Base: How to Choose
Ally Labs

Ally Labs works with brands through three pathways: New Product Development, Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base, and Tech Transfer. The first two questions we hear most often are the same ones you’re probably asking. Do you need a formula built from scratch, or can you start from an established formulation foundation? Here’s how we help brands answer that.
Two Paths to the Same Destination
Both pathways end at the same place: a finished, manufacturable product ready for production. The difference is where you start.
New Product Development
New Product Development begins with your concept. Our formulation team builds the product around your specific vision, your target claims, and your positioning in the market. It’s the right fit when your idea doesn’t exist yet in any form, or when your product needs to stand apart on a specific formulation feature.
Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base
Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base starts further down the road. You’re not buying a finished product off a shelf. These are not white label or shared-use finished products. We retain ownership of internal base formulas, and you customize from there to create a differentiated version aligned with your brand. A pre-stabilized base gives you a formulation foundation we’ve already developed and stabilized, ready to be shaped around your fragrance, texture, and positioning.

When New Product Development Fits
New Product Development tends to fit best when:
- Your product concept doesn’t overlap with an existing base formula in our library
- You need a specific active ingredient, claim, or performance target that requires custom formulation work
- You’re building a flagship product meant to differentiate your brand at a formulation level
- Timeline flexibility matters less to you than getting the formula exactly right
Custom formulas move through a 90-day stability period before client approval, so this pathway asks for more lead time up front. In exchange, you get a formula built entirely around your specifications.
When a Pre-Stabilized Base Fits
Build on a Pre-Stabilized Base tends to fit best when:
- You want to launch a new SKU, line extension, or seasonal product without a full R&D cycle
- A market window is open now, and a custom formulation timeline doesn’t match it
- You’re comfortable starting from an established formulation foundation and customizing fragrance, texture, and packaging fit around it
- You want our formulation team reviewing packaging, positioning, and production fit alongside you, rather than starting the review process from zero
We currently offer pre-stabilized bases across skincare, hair care, bath and body, and pet care, with two to four example bases per category. If none of the examples feel like the right starting point, that’s a conversation, not a dead end. We can help you find a closer fit or scope a custom formula instead.
Questions to Ask Before You Decide
A few questions tend to clarify which pathway fits:
How much of the formula needs to be unique to your brand?
If the answer is “almost none of it, we’re differentiating on branding and marketing,” a pre-stabilized base is worth exploring. If the answer is “the formula itself is our differentiator,” New Product Development is the better starting point.
What’s your timeline?
A pre-stabilized base can reduce early formulation work and may help move a project into sampling sooner, depending on the selected base and requested changes. A ground-up custom formula generally requires more development, since the formulation work starts from concept.
Do you already know your target claims and positioning?
Clear, specific goals help either pathway move faster. Vague goals slow down both.
You don’t need a final answer before reaching out. Part of our first conversation is helping you figure out which pathway actually fits your brand and your timeline.
What Happens After You Choose
Once you’ve picked a starting point, the process looks similar either way: consultation and project review, formulation or base selection, sample development, client approval, and production. Once the formula is approved, required testing is addressed, materials and packaging are confirmed or on-site, and the project is production-ready, typical production lead time is approximately six to eight weeks. Actual timing varies by project and production scheduling.
The pathway you choose shapes how you get to that first sample. It doesn’t change the level of review your product gets before it reaches production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch pathways after I start?
Yes. If a custom formula turns out to overlap closely with an existing pre-stabilized base, we’ll flag it. The same goes if a base needs more customization than expected. Either way, our team talks through the better fit with you.
How long does each pathway take?
Development timing varies by pathway, formula, customization, testing, sourcing, packaging, and client review. A Pre-Stabilized Base may reduce early formulation work, while a ground-up custom formula generally requires more development. Once the formula is approved, required testing is addressed, materials and packaging are confirmed or on-site, and the project is production-ready, typical production lead time is approximately six to eight weeks. Actual timing varies by project and production scheduling.
Do I need to know which pathway fits before I reach out?
No. Tell us what already exists — a concept, an approved Base starting point, or an existing product or formula — and our team can help determine the appropriate pathway. Starting from a Pre-Stabilized Base may reduce early development work but does not guarantee a specific launch date.
